STUDENT LIFE ON CAMPUS

Student Hostel:

The Seminary compound is the centre of the seminary life. All students are expected to contribute their quotas to make it habitable. Each student is also required to exercise the greatest discretion and self-discipline in relation to other students, quarters, authorities and staff as well as the general public. A cordial and strong relationship should exist. For this reason, effort should be made to make life secured, pleasant and accommodative. While in the seminary, a conducive atmosphere shall be produced for learning. ETS is interested in the spiritual, academic and social life of students. It is for this reason that it hopes to ensure a rich Christian experience for students by providing a balance in all spheres of life of the seminary.

Orientation

An orientation activity is usually organized for fresh students at the beginning of every session. This activity is intended to enlighten and enable new students settle and adjust to Seminary life. The students are introduced to the functions of the various academic and non-academic departments of the Seminary namely: the accounts section, the library, students’ farm areas, dispensary, staff’s and students’ houses/hostels, classes, administrative section etc.

Language

The language of the seminary is English. Classes are conducted in English Language in order to facilitate learning and language of communication in and outside the class room except for the Women Institute where Hausa may be used. All Students are encouraged to help themselves and each other by using English language at all social occasions. Couples are encouraged to help each other by using English Language at homes as much as possible. The Seminary encourages all students to become proficient Hausa speakers, since it’s the lingua –Franca of the Northern Nigeria and the common language of ERCC meetings. With English language as a course required to be taken or studied in the three or four years in the seminary, every effort should be made to be fluent in English language before graduation. The Seminary hopes and encourages a cordial, good and healthy interaction between the students and the staff.

Spiritual Group:

Spiritual groups approved by the faculty are to be kept and activated. Students are strongly advised to join these groups in accordance with the person’s ability and gift (s). No one should hold more than one office even if he or she is in more than one group. Year one students are advised not to join so many groups. Any student with poor academic performance may not be allowed to hold any position in any group to help him/her academically. Such a student should see participation in spiritual groups as opportunity to seek help from members. The various groups are asked to perform mostly at the chapel or even outside as the need arises especially when there is a guest Lecturer(s) or visitors. From time to time films or videos are shown and usually intended for the families of students as well as students themselves. The spiritual groups in the seminary include: choir, women fellowship, music band, boys’ brigade, new life for all, KYKN, FCS, Drama group, men fellowship, girls’ brigades and girls’ fellowship. Every students shall be a member of at least one of the spiritual groups. Spiritual groups fellowship shall be held every Monday 4:00 to 6:00pm.

Recreational Activities:

The Seminary encourages involvement in sports. Football, volley-ball, hand ball, draft, badminton and Tennis are sometimes played in competition. A Provost Cup competition is held every year to encourage active participation by students in sports. The school has the following teams for the competition: Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth and Samaria reflecting the four cities of David. Tuesdays and Thursdays evening (4:00-6:00pm) are set aside specially for sporting and recreational activities. Students are encouraged to participate in all seminary sporting and recreational activities for health and creativity benefits.

Library:

ERCC Theological Seminary has a Library which houses 3,800 volumes of books for circulation and reference units. The Collection is being updated and enlarged continually. Books may be borrowed to students and staff within a Semester at a time for use in specific courses. The Seminary also has over 3,000 volumes of e-books as resource materials for research through the internet services. The library operates from 8:00am to 1:00pm, then from 2:00pm to 7:00pm Mondays to Fridays. Students are expected to register in the library in order to obtain library card.

Students’ Body:

The students’ body is approved by the school authority for the purpose of interest, unity and progress of the students; the responsibilities of the students’ body are contained in its constitution. For further details, see the “Constitution of the Students’ Body”.

Membership:

Every student of the seminary undertaking Diploma or Degree programme, regular or part time will automatically become a member of the STUDENTS’ BODY by payment of the student activity fee set by the students’ body as approved by the school management.

Duties

It shall be the duty of every member of the students’ to:

1. See to the spiritual, social, economic and physical growth of the Body.
2. Be faithful, honest, loyal and truthful at all times in every duty assigned to him/her.
3. Report all matters to the appropriate committees or authorities without any bias or sentiment.
4. Attend all meetings that concern students.
5. Keep confidential the proceedings of all meetings; confidential proceedings will be announced only by an authorized person(s).
6. Respect and obey the school rules and regulations.

Privileges

Every member has the privilege:

1. To be protected by the Body when his or her right is denied.
2. To contribute and express his or her feelings in all meetings that concern him or her.
3. To vote and be voted for any election as defined by the constitution of the student Body.
4. To be considered equal under the constitution.
